The Advantages of CDPAP Caregiver Training over Traditional Caregiver Training

Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program (CDPAP) is a New York Medicaid program that provides services to low-income individuals who are chronically ill or physically disabled and not capable of living independently. CDPAP beneficiaries can choose a family member or a friend to act as a caregiver who will help them in activities of daily life and provide skilled nursing services.

CDPAP caregiver training is simple and targeted to the patient’s individual needs. The training is done by the patient or the patient’s designated representative and is completely free. CDPAP caregivers are allowed to provide much broader types of care than traditional caregivers such as home health aides and personal care aides. In fact, CDPAP caregivers can offer the same care that a registered nurse would provide, for example, giving injections, wound care, providing oxygen therapy, along with other advanced nursing skills and services.

CDPAP caregivers are not required to have any formal training, license, or certification. They must only be willing and physically capable to provide the necessary care that the patient needs. Although New York State provides all new caregivers with a set of training modules about working as a caregiver, this training is not mandatory.
